Using Intentions to Heal from Narcissistic Abuse
- Maggie MacKenzie
- Intention
Healing after narcissistic abuse can feel overwhelming and confusing. It’s like trying to find your footing when the ground beneath you keeps shifting. I know how challenging it can be to reconnect with yourself amidst the storm. One simple practice that’s helped me—and many women I’ve worked with—is setting gentle intentions.
What Does Setting an Intention Really Mean?
It’s not about trying to control everything or “make” things happen perfectly. Instead, it’s more like planting a tiny seed inside yourself—a soft invitation to focus on what you want to feel or how you want to show up. It’s a way to quietly say, “This is what matters to me right now.”
If you’ve been through narcissistic abuse, your sense of self might feel fragile or lost. Setting intentions is a way to start reclaiming your power, little by little. It shifts your attention away from the past and toward what you’re choosing now—like peace, safety, or self-love.
Why Intentions Matter in Healing
You’ve probably heard the saying, “Our intention creates our reality.” And honestly? It’s true. When we pause and really decide what energy we want to bring into our lives, something shifts inside us. It’s like our nervous system relaxes just a bit, and we feel safer.
Intentions help us slow down and listen—to our own needs, to our inner voice, which may have been drowned out by all the hurt and noise. They create space for kindness and help us rewrite the stories we tell ourselves.
How to Start Setting Gentle Intentions
Keep it small and simple. Maybe today your intention is, “I will take three deep breaths when I feel overwhelmed,” or “I will notice one thing I’m grateful for.” Small intentions feel doable, and they build trust with yourself.
Try combining it with meditation or Reiki. Meditation helps quiet the mind, and Reiki supports your energy flow. Together, they make a safe space where your intentions can really take root.
Be kind to yourself. Healing isn’t a straight line. Some days will be easier, others harder. Intentions aren’t about being perfect—they’re about showing up for yourself, again and again.
The Ripple Effect of Your Intentions
When you live with intention, it’s not just about your own healing. It sends out ripples—lifting your relationships, your community, even the world around you.
If you’re just starting your healing journey, know this: setting gentle intentions can be a soft, powerful way to guide you back to yourself—your truth, your strength, your light.
If you’re curious, I’d love to share some simple practices to help you begin setting your own intentions, whether through meditation, Reiki, or just quiet reflection.
You’re doing better than you think, and every step counts.
